GREETINGS FROM mALAYSIA!
This is Indra, writing to express my grateful thanks for having replied promptly. Now i can start planing my trip, region by region. Any suggestions on how to travel, bearing in mind that it is a single lady, trying to fulfill a dream of covering all holy sites in India. My plan is to visit the Shakti sites there. This would be my third trip there, and would like suggestions or recommendations of a good tour agent to take me to these places, and other pilgrim sites in West Bengal. I hope to get a reputable agent this time, not one who will take me for a ride. Once again, a million thanks. Looking forward to your guidance and advice.
Regards,
Indra :D :D :D

It's great to hear your wish in visiting Shakti temples. My personal greetings to you.
First of all have a look at 51 Shaktipeethas map and 18 Shaktipeethas map.

From your post I came to understand that you are now planning to visit West bengal. I made a trip to West bengal and Kamakhya (Assam) in the last Summer for about 15 days. Though I have not covered many of the Shaktipeethas, I can suggest few points.

  1. Time is the criteria: You need at least 40 days to cover all important Shakti temples of West bengal.
  2. Don't expect good travel facilities: Of-course, I don't know how much you can spend. But, the places we have to go are not on highways. And, you may have heard about the travel facilities of West bengal, You have to face them.
  3. No local guides: Especially for these places. Another important thing is, many Shaktipeethas are in Muslim dominated towns and villages and in their localities. I couldn't get good answers from them. You can search Google for Hindu muslim West bengal.
  4. I'm not discouraging you: Please don't misunderstand me. I encourage you to go ahead. I can guess the experience you got in two previous trips. But, I have to tell the truth. Don't go singly. Ya, you are also not planning like that.
  5. Extra help: I have prepared some sort of planning for myself. That may help you. But, how much time you are going to spend? That is most important. I can give details according to your need.

Thanks for responding and for tips. I am now caught in a bind, as I always travel alone, not by choice but circumstances. I am a retired teacher, and would welcome your personal suggestions travel in West BENGAL. I may have to breakup my trips into two-three visits, averaging 21 days each time. My main concern is my safety when traveling in India, and that is how I have been traveling around India, staying in reputable hotels, and taking the guide & transport from the hotel itself. So far,my the grace & protection of MAA, I have covered quite a bit of India. Your response is also taken as a sign from MAA. I hope you would guide me further on this issue. I am a devotee of MAA, and it is my faith & belief in MAA, that has kept me going on in life. I am a Hindu by birth, but whatever knowledge of my religion has been through readings and trying to get information through the internet.
I hope I am not misusing this web site as I really want to fulfill a life long dream.
Some questions that I would like to raise, are:
1. `Why is there so many different lists of locations of Shakti peethas?'
2. What is the simplest form of `Bhakta devotion' for `MAA' for a person who only can read, speak & write in English?

Thank you,
Indra

You are not at all misusing it. This website is actually built for people like us.

About your questions:
I'm very younger to you and these answers may or may not satisfy. Just have a look at them.

1. The first question is a little bit easy to answer.
  • Origin of all Shaktipeethas is linked with the same story of Sati devi.
  • Let us first understand the two names of Maa.
Sati = Who always accompanies 'Sat', The eternal Truth (Shiva)
Shakti = Who energizes this Universe
  • In that story, Daksha, wished to conduct a very big Yagna without calling Lord Shiva. Entire universe accepted it and attended. That means, Nobody is interested in Shiva, The eternal Truth. It resulted in the loss of Sati i.e, Shakti.
  • Lord Shiva know the dangerous consequences of disappearance of Shakti. He is Adi Guru (After all, it is the eternal Truth which guides us, The real Guru). He prepared to uplift this entire Universal energy. This adventurous act took him into an exalted state.
  • Vishnu understood the condition, became a follower of Shiva, and established Shakti in various best places as Shaktipeethas.
If we look at the 108 Shaktipeethas list from Devi Bhagavata Maha Purana, we can understand this point very clearly. It lists Indrani in Swarga (Wife of the ruler of Heaven), Prabha in Suryamandala (Glow of Sun) and also Vandaniya (Badanika, a small creeper which grows on the Ashwattha tree. It's roots will penetrate into the trunk of Ashwattha and will not touch land. It is considered very holy).
Shakti concentrated in those places and appeared as Avataras also. That is why almost all Shaktipeethas have separate stories.
Now, let us look at the question. Why there are many lists? We can't count the places where Lord Vishnu established Shakti. But, various Gurus have been training their students with a list of important Shaktipeethas which are useful to their tradition. All these lists are tradition based. That is why different lists. I personally know 15 lists and also variations in each list. In the course of time, some of the traditions became extinct and some became dormant (Many of them are Tantric).
But, the lists remained, as it is easy to remember than to follow :)

2. The second question is very big and people who attained the peaks of spirituality only can answer. O.k, I'll tell my opinion. English or Sanskrit, for that matter, any other language is not at all needed to reach God. 'Maa' is the closest form of God (at least, for me and you).
Things I learned from my Guru from which you may find answer:
  1. You can't make a close relation with an Indian (Observe, Broad sense). Your relation will strengthen only if you select one specific Indian. Likewise, select a form of Maa to worship. It is must to become close, called as "Ishta Nishtha" in Shastras.
  2. "Nama Japa" (Chanting the name of God) is the simplest way to develop spiritually. Observe, "Name of Maa". All mantras and Tantras are it's development only. We can understand the sweetness with just a single sugar particle, we need not know the secrets of preparing a complicated sweet.
  3. Read the life of SriRamaKrishna Paramahamsa. It will give many suggestions.
