This is one of the ancient shiva temple of kerala and it has one significance that is, in the temple compound there are plants which are representing the stars and people use to pour water to get rid off their sins according to their janma nakshatra .The place "kandiyoor "owes its origin from lord shiva only i.e.Neelakanta.
How to reach Kandiyoor:
Kandiyoor Shiva temple present in Mavelikara, Alappuzha district. It is well connected by Road, Railway, Air routes. Nearest Bustand and Raliway stations are in Mavelikara. Nearest Airporta are at Trivandrum and at Cochin which are at about 100 km distance.
Importance of Kandiyoor Mahadev:
Here Lord Shiva was worshipped in three forms. In the morning as Dakshinamurthy (Guru rupa), who will teach knowledge to us. In Afternoon as Uma Maheswara, who is the father of Universe. In the evening Kiratamurthy, who will protect us from all obstacles.

Kandiyoor has another importance also. Mrukunda Maharshi (Father of Markandeya maharshi) worshipped Lord shiva and placed Kirathamurthy shiva in this holy place. This temple was built by Cheraman Perumal Nayanar Rajasekara Varman in 823 AD.
