There are two Shakti peethas, a Jyotirlinga, a Vishnava kshetra and many other temples in this city.

Sthala purana:Skanda purana give many a names to Ujjain. Each of them suggest a different aspect of it.
Avanti: The one which protects.
Ujjaini: The one which defeats enemies.
Kusha sthali: The one which is pure.
Padmavati: The one which is the place of lakshmi.
Mahakala vana: The one in which Mahakala resides.
Amaravati: The one which is full of gods.
Kanaka sringa: The one which is rich.
Vishala: The one which is spacious.
There are many stories linked with Ujjain.1.Shiva purana tells that Mahakala protected four Brahmins from the demon Dushanasura and supported Vedic tradition.
2.Mahakala gave Philosopher’s stone to the king Chandra sena and saved him from his enemies who came to steal that stone.
3.Mahakala gave a lot of wealth to the five years old cow keeper boy named Srikara. Pleased by his devotion Lord Anjaneya trained him in Shiva puja. Anjaneya blessed him that Lord Vishnu will born as Sri Krishna, in his family, in the eighth generation.
4.Skanda purana tells that Ujjaini is the capital of the demon Andhakasura. Mahakala came here, and kílled the demon with the help of Mahakali.
5.Here Lord Shiva got Pashupatastra by worshiping Mahakali, and kílled the demons Tripurasuras.
